Where can I buy an OUYA?
You can pre-order OUYA at shop.OUYA.tv. Units will begin shipping in June. You can also pre-order OUYA at Amazon.com, Best Buy, GameStop and Target.
When will the OUYA console be available?
Kickstarter backers will receive their OUYA in March. Orders placed on OUYA.tv prior to February 4th will receive their units starting in April. Current orders placed on OUYA.tv or from one of our retail partners will be delivered beginning in June.
I heard that games released for the console need to be “Free to Play.” Is that true?
The short answer is no. The longer answer is that all games need to include some *free* element. Your game can offer a demo or you can have a totally free game with in-app items for purchase.
All game purchasing will occur in games using “in-app purchasing.” These purchases can include, but are not limited to: “Unlock full game”, “Unlock level 2”, or “Purchase 500 magic coins”.
Do I need a credit card/debit card or some other payment instrument to get an OUYA account?
Yes. You will be asked to provide payment information *before* you can download any games. Everything is free to try so you may never purchase anything, but, we need to collect your information upfront. We will expand our options as we grow. Initially, we will support credit cards, debit cards, and pre-paid/gift cards and promo cards (in June). Remember: we will never charge you unless you decide to make a purchase (for example, you want to unlock the full game or buy the flaming sword).
How do you pronounce OUYA?
OOO-yah. Apparently it doesn’t have the most pleasant meaning in Swahili.
What features will the controller support?
The official OUYA controllers are wireless (Bluetooth) and powered by 2 AA batteries. Up to 4 controllers can be connected to an OUYA console at one time.
Features:
- Two analog joysticks, each with their own “button” (i.e. L3 + R3)
- A D-Pad
- Four face buttons (labeled O, U, Y, and A)
- Two digital shoulder buttons (L1 + R1)
- Two analog triggers (L2 + R2)
- A menu button (to open the OUYA menu at any time during a game)
- A touchpad (to mimic mouse/touch controls or to be used in games)
- Player LED indicators (so you know which player a connected controller is set to)
Will game “X” be available?
It’s entirely up to developers whether they release games for OUYA. If there’s a particular game you would like to see released on OUYA, feel free to reach out to the game’s developer and let them know you want it on OUYA.
How much does it cost to develop for OUYA?
There’s no up-front cost to release a game for OUYA. The ODK (OUYA Development Kit) and documentation are freely available at http://devs.ouya.tv.
For in-app purchases, developers receive 70% and OUYA receives 30%.
Is there a difference between the OUYA developer console that releases in December and the one Kickstarter backers receive in March 2013?
There will be no functional differences in the console hardware. Details in the cosmetic look and feel of the console and controllers will be refined over the intervening months.
The developer console and controllers will also have a unique visual difference to them.
Other than games, will there be any apps available on OUYA?
We’ve already announced that Twitch.tv, VEVO, iheartradio, XBMC, and Plex will be available. We are in discussions with other media streaming services to provide official apps for OUYA.
What resolutions does OUYA support?
OUYA will support 1080p and 720p over HDMI.
Can I play my OUYA games on my other Android devices?
Not at this time.
Can I play Android games purchased from Google Play on OUYA?
No.
Will OUYA have built-in friend list, leaderboard and achievement support?
Not at launch. After launch these features will be at the top of our list to add.
Can I still order one of those clear Developer consoles?
We are sold out of our limited run Developer consoles and controllers. But not to worry, ALL OUYAs come developer-ready, so if you’d like to get your hands on one starting in June 2013, pre-order one now! You can also start building games today by downloading our OUYA Development Kit (ODK) at devs.OUYA.tv.
I don’t live in the United States. Will OUYA be available in my country?
OUYA will be available worldwide and will include a universal power supply with an adapter for the wall sockets in your region. We also use a global shipping and fulfillment parter, so you can rest assured that OUYA will ship via a carrier that is familiar with the customs processes of your country.
